NCIG’s Hayden Whiteside, along with brothers Jason and Craig Mascord, have made their colleagues proud – representing NCIG and finishing second place in the corporate category at the Hunter Life Education’s 2018 Soap Box Derby on the weekend in Muswellbrook.

After constructing their purpose-built billy cart, the Mascord brothers set the course on fire with their cart, although sources from the race tell us it was their made-to-order NCIG race-wear that helped with their lightning speed!

The inaugural event was hosted by Hunter Life Education and raises funds for free or subsidised educational programs for youth in the area. The monies raised aim to empower youngsters to lead a safe and healthier life through the programs provided by the organisation.

Jason Mascord said they were keen to enter and support Hunter Life Education and the work they do for youth in the region.

“We have fond memories of Healthy Harold and learning how to live happy healthy lives. So we were really keen to support Hunter Life Education in continuing that message to kids.”

Construction of the cart utilised a stainless steel space frame with industrial scale bearings and re-purposed kids BMX bike wheels. In all, the design, manufacture and testing took approximately 40 man-hours.

“It was lots of fun and definitely took us back to our days of being kids and taking on lots of hairy rides around Kurri and Charlestown,” Craig said.

“The race itself was great but to be honest, I probably would have liked the hill to be a bit steeper!”

“Thankfully there were no speed wobbles thanks to help from the team at Newcastle Stainless, who made a major contribution to the construction of the cart.”
